Theory Vocal Experiment (Theory) was formed in 2024 by Kevin Badanes, founder of the acclaimed vocal jazz octet Avante. The group is based in the Raleigh/Durham area of North Carolina. The sextet features several prominent figures in a cappella, including VP Rachel Chalhoub, seen on The Sing Off with Element. Theory pioneers a genre of a cappella storytelling, with vignettes sung in styles ranging from contemporary, to musical theater, to progressive rock. A Theory show might pull from their project 'Songs From Shows that Don't Exist,' staged musical theater 'arrangements' from shows that haven't been written but might someday. One might also hear what is the first true progressive music written for a cappella, complete with odd time signatures, crazy instrumental breakdowns, and stacked motifs. The challenge 20 years ago was to stretch the limits of the human voice. Theory seeks to stretch the reach of a cappella to the limits of human audience.
