The Chromatics

Mixed Contemporary Duo from Greenbelt, MD

People often ask us how the Chromatics got started. It's a complicated story, but here's a brief summary:

Back in 1993, a group called the OK Chorale was formed at NASA'S Goddard Space Flight Center by Anne Raugh and Steve Leete. The OK Chorale was 12 members strong and sang mostly doo-wop tunes, standards, and classics from Sesame Street. None of the current Chromatics were in the group at its inception, but Padi Boyd and Karen Smale joined in 1993, followed by Alan Smale and Deb Nixon in 1994.

After numerous further changes in personnel, including the departure of co-founder Anne Raugh, the group decided to refocus and reinvent itself as The Chromatics. The Chromatics were incorporated in 1995, and have been performing continuously under that name ever since.

Chromatics: AstroCappella 2.0

Whoever said it doesn't take a rocket scientist to sing a cappella hasn't heard the Chromatics (Padi Boyd, Lisa Kelleher, Paul Kolb, John Meyer, Deb Nixon, Alan Smale and Karen Smale)! Funded by various NASA info groups, this CD doubles as a multimedia CD-ROM containing lesson plans, images, movies, slide shows etc., all about our solar system. With songs like "Nine Planets," "Lunar Love," "Come and Visit Mars" and "Dance of the Planets," the Chromatics' purpose, to teach in a fun way, is obvious-but what is surprising is how good they, and the songs, are. Learn and enjoy!

Chromatics: First Light

Making their first appearance in our catalog, this talented nine-piece group has produced an entertaining CD that includes various covers such as Rush's "Subdivisions" and Alanis' "Ironic," as well as four originals. The album's opener is "Chromatic Organum," by CASA and Bobs' songbook arranger Anne Raugh, which describes the nature of a cappella singing. Another highlight is "Fast Food," which is capably performed by Padi Boyd. The Chromatics show much promise and we appreciate that they chose some material not typically heard a cappella.
