The Velvet Frogs Barbershop Quartet is the 2011 Senior Quartet Champion of the Far Western District of the Barbershop Harmony Society (S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A.). The quartet members represent chorus chapters from all over the Southern California area & have been singing together for eight years. The Frogs have competed 5 times at the international level in the senior division, placing as high as 3rd in the world. This popular group of singers perform the “old songs” in the “old style” reminiscent of the early 1900’s, and have been selected “audience favorite” in the past 4 regional competitions.
Craig Ewing, tenor, joined the Frogs in 2015 and is a three-time Far Western District quartet champion (Musician’s Choice 1988, Rhythm & Rhyme 1993, and Hi-Fidelity 2005). Hi-Fi are the Harmony Sweepstakes 2007 National A Cappella Champions. Craig has been the musical director of the Orange Empire Chorus in Fullerton, California for 16 years, and has won 4 gold medals singing with the Masters Of Harmony. He has been a barbershopper for 40 years, and is a Certified Singing Judge. Craig and his very patient and supportive wife, Marie, have four daughters, eight grandchildren, and four “greats”.
David Livingston, Lead, has been singing Barbershop Harmony for 57 years. David graduated from the University of California in Santa Barbara. Born and raised in Southern California, he lived in Connecticut for 6 years, and in Switzerland and Germany for another 6 years. While living in Europe, David even sang with the Zurich Switzerland Barbershop Chorus. David is retired from Pepperdine University in Malibu, California, after 15 years of service.
CJ Sams, Baritone, is a 47 year member of the Barbershop Harmony Society and has lived in Long Beach, CA all his life. CJ sang tenor with Four Points West, Margerry Shardons Favorite Barbershop Quartet, and lead with the Stage Hogs and has won 3 international chorus champion medals with the Masters Of Harmony barbershop chorus.
