The Akafellas

The Akafellas are five guys from Olympia and Tacoma that love singing a cappella music. You may remember the name...a few in this group (Jon, Tony & Jon) sang with the original group of the same name back in the late 90's. A few of us have sang with some other groups since, but we've reformed again as The Akafellas and want to continue on with new voices and fun music. We really love coming to the Harmony Sweepstakes and getting to hear and meet other groups that love a cappella music as much as we do. Our name is not new, but our sound is. We've added vocal percussion and new voices but, as with the last group, we enjoy singing many different styles of a cappella music from doo-wop to pop, barbershop, rock, soul and yes, even country. We sing some old and some new, but overall, we just get a kick out of getting together to sing and have fun!

The Baudboys

Back around 1990, a couple of the founding members of the coed Microtones decided that they wanted to form a men's a cappella group at Microsoft so that they could sing the charts from their college groups. The original quartet consisted John Rae-Grant, bass and musical director, Bill Pope, baritone, Bob Gunderson, 2nd tenor, and David Olsen, 1st tenor. True to their profession, the group's chosen name, The Baudboys, referred to the method by which modem speeds were rated. The group performed only a few times in its first years of existence, doing lunch time gigs on the Microsoft campus.

As members left Microsoft over the years, they would also leave the Baudboys, prompting natural turnover in the membership. During the 1990's, the group expanded it's membership, aiming to have two full quartets within the group. Since that time, the group has remained at 7-9 members, but the expanded membership has allowed the group to sing more complex arrangements than the 4-part charts that the founders envisioned.

In October of 2013 Boots 'n' Cats submitted an application to ICCA (the International Championships of A'Cappella) and received notification in November of their acceptance. Boots 'n' Cats is currently working towards the ICCAs in the hopes of placing top two and advancing to the next round of competition. DISH

DISH formed in late 2004 with the intention of creating sassy, original and musically excellent a cappella. They recruited potential singers through the magic of Craigslist, and after a rigorous audition process found the seven sparkling vocal personalities they call DISH. Dirty, Delisha, Diva, Sugar, Candy, Saucy, and Deep DISH offer up some scrumptious a cappella. Their lyric-writing bursts usually happen in the middle of rehearsals, and they store these disruptions in a book fondly called the DISHionary. Because traditional a cappella music doesn't cater to the bottom range of women's voices, they write many of their own arrangements. Their self-titled first album was released this year.

Essence of Larynx

he Larynx is that thing in your throat that makes noise, enabling speech, singing, yodeling, and Wookiee sounds. The voice box. Essence of Larynx makes noises with theirs, a selection of larynxes (larynges?) renown for their function if not for their form. Essence of Larynx also employs tongue, lips, teeth, and sometimes that thingy that hangs down in the back of the throat to create unique musical constructions. Their larynges (larynxes?) don't mind the assistance, since some of the stuff that comes out is a little strange, and it's nice to have more visible parts of the vocal tract take the blame for the nonsense.

In early 1997, Kickshaw won first place in the Regional Harmony Sweepstakes competition. This is a title only awarded to nine groups throughout the nation each year. Following the 1997 competition, Kickshaw decided that they were ready to pursue music full time.

In search of their own sound, Kickshaw began working with some effects to extend their already eclectic repertoire. This addition was an instant hit with their audiences as they were able to create the sounds of a full band, effects and all, with just their voices giving Kickshaw a sound all their own.

Shadywood Boys

Shadywood Boys are four guys who get together to sing. We graze freely through the pasture of quartet styles: a little Jubilee Quartet here, a little Doo-Wop there, maybe a bit of Barbershop. Sometimes we wander into the back forty and browse 19th century styles such as Antebellum Spirituals - or even some Shape-Note Singing. But there is one patch of grass we keep coming back to: a style of singing that emerged from the Southeastern U.S. in the 1930's and 40s that would become known as Southern Gospel. This style carries through the early recordings of bands like The Stanley Brothers, Bill Monroe, and Flatt and Scruggs. It's retro-phonic, and we like it. Though our membership has changed over the years, our goals have not: we strive to bring the highest quality vocal music to audiences of all ages Our repertoire includes lush jazz arrangements, traditional and show tunes and the occasional novelty number. If "a cappella" is our first name, "entertainment" is our second name.. Audiences come back again and again because they have so much fun watching us have fun! Wild Rose is a diverse group of singers whose interests and careers include computer consultant, health professional, dental hygienist, band director, newspaper writer, piano teacher, biofeedback specialist, minister, golfer, parent and grandparent. All share a love of a cappella pop and jazz vocal music.

5-Track

5-Track was born out of an arranging and recording project that Jan and Martin put together. A constant lure for the two, they managed to pursue a cappella singing and arranging in forming an increasingly permanent group. Rehearsing together Since September '99 on evenings and weekends, the current groups plans include a tour of Japan in July.

Chain Reaction

Chain Reaction: We've been around for a while in different quartets, but when this foursome came together, we knew it was the sound we'd been looking for! We've been singing together for about two years, enjoying the sound, enjoying each other's company, and most of all enjoying performing! Placing 10th, after setting our goal for top 10 in our first regional Sweet Adeline's competition, taught us to set our goals much higher and to realize that they are achievable. In April we'll be back on the Sweet Adeline's regional competition stage in Spokane looking for a medal! We're here to dispel the myth that all Sweet Adeline's are blue-haired ladies! We are all professional women with similar office positions. Mari Coffee and Bonnie Crockett both work for the State of Washington. Patty Hale manages some of the most beautiful apartment properties in the state, and Nancy Carlson keeps their family business, Carlson Electric, running like clockwork.

Double Shot

Double Shot is Olympia’s newest quartet! We decided to start blending our voices merely days before the entry deadline for the Sweepstakes. We are having a great time and looking forward to making a bunch of music together. We have all enjoyed being involved in different musical and artistic activities over the years including singing a cappella music, playing the piano, dancing and rock-and-rolling in a Beatle Band. Mother/daughter combo, Stephanie and Amber, have enjoyed singing together most recently in a local, female, a cappella group called Chanteuse. Tony and Jon, formerly of The Akafellas, are thrilled to be singing a cappella music again.

Fretless Quartet

Fretless, from Redmond, Washington, may be only a year old, but its members are experienced veterans of the music world. Martin was a member of The Banned, which won the Northern California Harmony Sweepstakes in the mid '90s. He and Beth were both members of the award-winning a cappella group Baysix. Fretless is rounded out by Sean, a professional actor, and Linda, a nightclub singer and symphony violinist. Fretless performs an unusual variety of styles from English Madrigals to Motown to original pieces. They're still figuring out how they found each other-but the result is magic.

Klapa Doo Wopella

Klapa Doo Wopella is one of the world's oldest ongoing musical ensembles devoted exclusively to singing a cappella. KlapaDooWopella specializes in traditional Croatian "Klapa" singing. Klapa singers are a cappella minstrels that hang out on boat docks and street corners along the Adriatic coast of Croatia. The passionate harmonic blend of traditional Klapa songs evokes uncaught fish, raging seas, and lost love. Despite forays into other genres, the quartet always returns to its first love, the moan of the sea that is the primal chord of the Klapa song.

Notorious

What do you get when you combine a Starbucks manager/dance instructor, a traveling computer salesman, a Behavorial Specialist, a Human Resource Supervisor, a Restaurant Manager/bartender and a Massage Therapist/private music teacher? You get Olympia's newest a cappalla group - Notorious. Members of Notorious are all veterans of other performing groups such as the Akafellas, DoubleShot, Chanteuse, and The Silhouettes. Notorious is from the Olympia area and was formed about a year ago. Last year, four of its members competed in the Northwest Harmony Sweepstakes as Double Shot. This year, they gained an extra pair of voices to broaden their musical horizons. They enjoy singing many styles of music and are constantly trying to find unique songs to put through the "a cappella filter". Despite their many busy schedules, Amber, Jon, Stephanie, Michi, Tony, and Lee find time to get together, eat, drink, laugh... and sometimes even sing. Their love for music and warped sense of humor combine to make them Notorious... but in a good way.

SoundDesign is all about a cappella - great a cappella. SoundDesign met and sang together for the first time in November of 1998 and we've been at it ever since - with one change: we now have a new bass, Kari Metzger, from Vancouver, B.C. She's awesome and we're having fun getting acquainted, learning new music, laughing, and planning new shtick. We are Carolyn Huber (tenor), Katy Sansburn (lead), Sue Beck (baritone), and Kari Metzger (bass). We each have experience with other successful quartets and choruses but bringing this foursome together is magical.

Vocal Tangent is Laugh-Cry-Smile-Sigh a cappella from Eugene, Oregon. Their six voices have been blending (and clashing!) since 1995, when they went off on a tangent from the Eugene Peace Choir-and didn't come back! Since then, they've left good vibrations at many of the Northwest's premier music festivals. Vocal Tangent loves to sing about issues ranging from the personal to the universal in a variety of styles. Northwest songwriters in particular have provided them with great material. In short, heart + humor + six-voice a cappella harmony = Vocal Tangent.
