The Harmony Sweepstakes A Cappella Festival, the premier American showcase for vocal harmony music, celebrates its 20th year in 2004. The annual national competition draws from hundreds of vocal groups from around the country with regional competitions in eight cities. The winning group from each festival is flown to perform in front of celebrity judges and a sold out house of enthusiastic a cappella fans at the National Finals.

Evolution

Evolution is an all male Vocal Rock Band, based on the Westside in LA. Together, these gentlemen use lyrical, tight harmonies, and a powerful synergy that creates great music and an entertaining good time. EVOLUTION plans to "Heal the World Through Harmony" using original arrangements ranging from the 50's to today's pop hits, as well as creative, ground-breaking originals that help their audiences think outside the box. Ladies and gentlemen, "Let EVOLUTION sing"!

2009 Participating Groups

Elemental Harmony - is a trio of women who delight in sharing their love of vocal music. Their eclectic a cappella repertoire includes selections from madrigals to modern, whimsical to world music, and everything in between. The trio shares their beautiful harmonies and original arrangements in a wide variety of venues, including music festivals, concert stages, private parties, and corporate events. The ladies of Elemental Harmony are very excited about sharing their music with you at Harmony Sweepstakes!

Members: Kris Wildman (soprano), Silvia Sarkissian (soprano), Terry Lieberstein (alto)

Expedia - An energetic, talented foursome that entertains audiences by presenting a program of music in multiple styles including modern, barbershop, etc.

King4 - The King lives – in quadruplicate! Live from Las Vegas, four sweet harmony crooning Elvi keep the spirit of the King of Rock & Roll burning strong… burning like a hunka hunka burnin love. Singing the greatest hits of the King, as well as songs he would have sung had he lived long enough, the King4 shake their collective pelvises regularly on Las Vegas stages, for corporate clients and private events, and at arts festivals and in concert halls. Viva Las Vegas!

Red Harmony - Red Harmony is a blend of trained musicians based in Los Angeles who put their composition, instrumental, and musical theater backgrounds to good vocal use. These singers have variously led ensembles and sung in choirs and a cappella groups, and all have all have pursued degrees in music. One won a songwriting competition, two are students at Cal Arts, three went to the University of Redlands, four studied instruments in college, five grew up on the West Coast, and six sing the smooth, exciting sounds that are Red Harmony. The eclectic group sings a repertoire of jazz, pop, and contemporary songs, including original arrangements and compositions.

These Guys - These Guys has been Thrilling audiences since 2005. They have made network T.V. appearances, opened for platinum recording artists, and been awarded in numerous music competitions. This all male ensemble sings Jazz, Hip Hop, R and B, Barbershop, Doo Wop, Rock , and Boogaloo. This will be These Guys first appearance in Harmony Sweepstakes.


Members: Josh Downtain (Bari/ Vocal percussion), Rob Gonzalez (Tenor/ Vocal Percussion), Jujuan Gailey (Bass/Bari), Anju Calilung (Tenor), Jazzari Smith (Baritone),  Johan Acu (Tenor), Mark Weidenhoffer (Bass/Bari), Kyle Housen (Tenor) 


Throat - is a Las Vegas vocal band that sings primarily original music. Influenced by classic to contemporary rock, as well as the pioneers of the contemporary a cappella vocal band movement, THROAT has performed with the best and the brightest on Las Vegas stages and beyond. THROAT is currently preparing to tour and release their first album.



Members: Aaron Paul (Tenor), Cian Coey (Soprano/Alto), Karisma Skye (Soprano/Alto), Richard Steighner (vp), Mister Tim (bass)


Vocal Magic - has been entertaining audiences since before the turn of the century. Their smooth vocal jazz style is inspired by groups such as Manhattan Transfer, the P.M. Singers, the Real Group, and Happy Jackson & the Quintessentials. The group is always scouring the globe for unique and interesting performance opportunities. Some of their favorites include music & arts festivals, park concerts, and Area 51 (CLASSIFIED). In a quest to promote the art of a cappella singing, Vocal Magic hosts "Javapella"- A monthly showcase of a cappella music in Orange County. Mix mirth with a cup of java, and add a sprinkle of magic- that's Vocal Magic!


Members: Glenn Phillip Wanke (Bass); Gabriella Rollins (Soprano I); Willem Van der Pol (Tenor); Linda Cicino (Alto); Ariana Attie (Soprano II)


Judges (and special performing guest artists)

Ready, Willing & Mabel - This Los Angeles-based vocal jazz group has been singing together since 2002 and has developed a loyal and enthusiastic following for its unique a cappella style and lively personality. The group’s sound has been described as “compelling,” “mesmerizing” and “a cocktail for the ears!”
Members:
Caroline McLean (Lead) - Began singing in her native England. Caroline sang in a champion quartet (42nd Street) and a champion chorus (White Rosettes). She now directs the LA South Towns Show Chorus.
Kate Walker (Alto) - Began her singing career singing 4 part harmony with her family in Christchurch New Zealand. She performed professionally with several New Zealand bands as lead singer and guitar player.
Peter Neushul (Bari) – Sang with the champion 139th St. quartet. He has performed on many TV spots including Cheers, Night Court, Gilmore Girls, etc. Peter also recorded on two of Neil Diamond’s albums. He currently directs the South Bay Coastliners Chorus.
Jim Campbell (Bass) – As a professional vocalist, Jim's film credits include National Treasure 2, The Haunted Mansion and the upcoming documentary Earth. His TV credits include The Tonight Show, The Simpsons, Home Improvement and The Carson Daly Show. He currently sings full-time with the Dapper Dans of Disneyland and is the bass of The Perfect Gentlemen who won the Harmony Sweepstakes in 2002. He also directs the Southland Harmony Chorus.
